Dunnage air bags are great for securing cargo during transport by filling empty spaces and preventing items from shifting. Here’s a general guide on how to use them:
Before you start:
- Inspect the bag: Check the valve and the entire bag for any tears or damage before using it.
- Prepare the cargo: Ensure your boxes or pallets are loaded tightly against the wall of the truck or container. Gaps between them should ideally be no more than 18 inches.
Inflating the dunnage bag:
- Positioning: Place the dunnage bag in the gap between the cargo, making sure it’s in a good position to provide stability.
- Inflation tool: You’ll typically need an inflation gun with a nozzle that fits the valve on the air bag. The inflation gun itself might connect to a separate air compressor.
- Filling the bag: Connect the inflation gun to the air bag’s valve and turn on the compressor. Inflate the bag gradually until it fills the space and creates pressure against the cargo, preventing it from moving.
Here are some additional tips:
- Protect the bag from sharp edges: If there are sharp edges on nearby boxes, cover them with padding to prevent them from puncturing the air bag.
- Don’t overinflate: The bag should be firm but not bursting.
- Deflation: When you unload the cargo, simply deflate the bag using the inflation gun (switched to deflation mode) or a valve depress tool.
